About the Role
We are currently seeking an experienced and skilled Legal and Law Enforcement Transcription Specialist to work on a freelance basis, transcribing and editing verbatim, multi-speaker, legal and investigative interviews, as well as other verbatim recordings such as Body Worn Camera recordings, 911 calls, and interrogations. This is a remote-based position, offering the flexibility to work from the comfort of your own home, with a minimum requirement of transcribing and returning 60 minutes of audio per day.
Key Responsibilities
- Transcribe law enforcement and legal audio recordings with accuracy and attention to detail, using verbatim formatting and following account style guides.
- Edit transcriptions to ensure clarity, consistency, and adherence to guidelines, including familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style for formatting and citation requirements.
- Proofread documents for errors and inconsistencies, ensuring high-quality output and meeting client expectations.
- Work efficiently and effectively to meet production targets, with a focus on delivering high-quality transcripts within tight deadlines.
- Collaborate with our team to ensure seamless communication and workflow, including participating in training and professional development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge.
Essential Qualifications
To be considered for this role, you must have:
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in legal or law enforcement transcription and/or editing, with a strong understanding of verbatim transcribing and formatting rules.
- A typing speed of 70 words per minute (wpm) or higher, with high accuracy and attention to detail.
- Experience with editing voice-recognized jobs and familiarity with transcription software and equipment, including a PC with Windows 10 or later, a USB transcription foot pedal, and a wired internet connection.
- A strong understanding of law enforcement and legal terminology, procedures, and protocols, with the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure accurate and reliable transcripts.
Preferred Qualifications
While not essential, the following qualifications are highly desirable:
- Active AAERT Certification, which will move you to the top of the interview list and demonstrate your commitment to excellence in transcription.
- Experience working with a variety of transcription software and platforms, including those used in law enforcement and legal settings.
