The Owned Brand Product Design and Packaging division is a vital component of this ecosystem, driving the creation and delivery of trendy, high-quality products that exceed customer expectations.
As a Packaging - Principal Value Designer, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the packaging strategy for Target's beloved owned brands, exclusive partnerships, and travel packaging. Your expertise will drive sales and brand loyalty by developing packaging that is customer-centric, on-brand, and competitively priced. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, leveraging internal and external resources to optimize packaging designs, materials, and systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and Implement Value Engineering Strategies: Create and execute plans to reduce costs and increase efficiency, maximizing the value of products and packaging across Owned Brand businesses.
- Business Acumen and Collaboration: Build a deep understanding of Target's supply chain and advanced order fulfillment processes, fostering a shared perspective across the Owned Brand organization and external partners.
- Drive Efficiencies and Innovation: Identify opportunities to pilot, test, and iterate packaging designs, materials, and systems, working closely with Global Supply Chain and Logistics (GSCL) networks.
- Lead Cross-Functional Teams: Collaborate with packaging teams to identify, prioritize, and execute damage mitigation, quality enhancement, and cost optimization opportunities, influencing decisions and design direction.
- Structured Problem-Solving and Process Optimization: Lead prioritization, execution, and sustained process improvements to positively impact vendor case pack (VCP), store shipping pack (SSP), unit of measure (UoM), item preparation, and container loading for packaging design standards at scale.
- Data-Driven Decision Making: Guide business decisions by highlighting potential opportunities, identifying connections, defining tests, and determining cause-and-effect relationships between packaging systems and GSCL, Sourcing, Value and Cost Engineering CoE, and Packaging Architects.
- Metrics and Performance Measurement: Define financial, analytical, and business metrics to measure complex decision model results, driving meaningful insights for value engineering strategies and prioritization.
- Collaboration and Innovation: Work with Product and Technology teams to advance data and reporting readiness, fostering a culture of innovation, balanced business acumen, testing, and learning.
- Regulatory Compliance and Risk Management: Understand the structure and impact of regulations and guidelines, identifying risks and opportunities for compliance.
- Team Culture and Development: Foster a positive team culture by demonstrating behaviors consistent with Target's values of Inclusivity, Connection, and Drive, ensuring ongoing, effective communications, and supporting individualized development through regular performance feedback, coaching, recognition, and assessment.
Essential Qualifications
To succeed in this role, you will need:
- A four-year degree in Manufacturing Excellence, Process Engineering, Packaging Engineering, or a related field; postgraduate education is preferred.
- Significant work experience in process improvement, with a minimum of several years in a relevant field.
- Green Belt Certification or knowledge of Lean or Six Sigma methodologies.
- Experience with execution metrics and process improvement techniques.
- The ability to influence without authority, manage projects, work with groups, resolve conflict, build consensus, establish rapport, and collaborate effectively across all levels of an organization.
- Flexibility and adaptability, with the capacity to pivot, be open to working in uncertain and constantly changing environments.
- Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, creative thinking, and analytical skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel), Visio applications.
