QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must hold a New York State permanent, initial or professional certification in Music and possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Ability to read and play brass instruments music/scores including excellent sight-reading skills
- Experience in teaching and training in brass instruments in both classical and contemporary situations
- Experience in performing on brass instruments in both classical and contemporary situations musical techniques.
- Ability to conduct ensembles at multiple grade and ability levels and ability to provide instruction in proper
- Ability to teach Music Theory from beginner to AP levels
- Ability to work collaboratively within a music department as well as with other arts disciplines for school wide productions, performances, and events
- Ability to work afterschool rehearsals and evening performance hours

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Include developing lesson plans and providing instruction in the following courses including but not limited to:
- Music Appreciation/History - A survey of Western Music in the following periods: Antiquity (Greece and Rome), Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Twentieth Century. Additional exposure to non Western traditions such as Asian, African, Afro-Caribbean, Pacific Rim and Native American music is also required. Duties: Develop listening lists; develop and administer formative and summative assessments; guide individual written/oral student projects and presentations; arrange team-teaching visits/residencies by outside authorities in music history; recommend/arrange for attendance at area/regional performances of music that relate to the curriculum.
- Music Theory I, II & III - A survey of topics in advanced harmony, counterpoint and composition based primarily on principles of 18th Century harmony and counterpoint covering the following topics: Review of basic elements of music theory including notational symbols (staff, clefs, notes, rests, time signatures, key signatures, tempo markings, dynamic markings), scales (all seven scale systems), intervals (melodic/harmonic), triads, chords (including 7th and 9th chords), triads built on all scale degrees, harmonic progressions, harmonic analysis, non-harmonic tones, open score writing, transposition, cadences, uses of the 6/4 chord, four-part writing and harmonization. Duties: Develop unit/individual lesson plans and listening lists; develop assignments relating to individual topics; develop and administer formative and summative assessments; develop and guide individual written/oral student projects and presentations.
- AP Music - The Advanced Placement (AP) Music Theory course corresponds to introductory college music theory coursework that covers topics such as musicianship, theory, and musical materials and procedures. Musicianship skills, including dictation and listening skills, sight-singing, and harmony, are an important part of the course. Through the course, students develop the ability to recognize, understand, and describe basic materials and processes of tonal music that are heard or presented in a score. Development of aural (listening) skills is a primary objective. Performance is also part of the curriculum through the practice of sight-singing. Students learn basic concepts and terminology by listening to and performing a wide variety of music. Notational skills, speed, and fluency with basic materials are emphasized.
- Arts Academy Jazz Ensemble ? An advanced ensemble composed of high school music majors. Repertoire stretches from the late19th through 21st Centuries and stresses advanced musical skills such as improvisation, sightreading, melodic phrasing, tone production, fret theory, advanced technique and awareness of different compositional periods and various jazz styles with a focus on swing, bebop and hard-bop. Develop critical jazz listening habits and evaluate the merits of various jazz artist/performances. Duties: Select wide-ranging repertoire that challenges and enhances the musical abilities of the members, prepare and execute daily rehearsals, schedule and conduct primarily school-based performances, prepare members for periodic adjudications/evaluations, stress/drill members in principles of reading, professional deportment, posture and concert etiquette, instill values of cooperative effort, punctuality, commitment to schedule and artistic integrity in the members, maintain/add to music library
- Advanced Concert Band - A performing ensemble composed of advanced instrumental majors. Repertoire stretches from the 16th through 21st Centuries and stresses advanced musical skills such as improvisation, expression, performance technique, small ensemble performance, electronic gear, technique and awareness of different performance styles using technology and for acoustic performance. Duties: Select wide-ranging repertoire that challenges and enhances the musical abilities of the members, prepare and execute daily rehearsals, schedule and conduct performances, prepare members for acceptance to university , conservatory, and professional ensembles.
- Brass Studies - Individual and small-group instruction via weekly lessons offered within the regular school-day schedule. Duties: Evaluate level at which each student enters instruction; design a comprehensive program of study that meets each student at his/her appropriate entry level and stresses growth in areas including scales, arpeggios, dexterity exercises and repertoire (a balanced mixture classical, popular, jazz and experimental compositions); evaluate and measure student growth via weekly lesson grade; develop and administer periodic formal playing assessments and semi-annual jury exams in the presence of at least one other music teacher/evaluator and semi-annual public group recitals; adjust individual course of study according to perceived rate of progress, areas of remedial need, and expressed interest areas; schedule and host public group recitals geared towards preparing students for professional and conservatory auditions.
