Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. Wilfrid Laurier University is seeking an instructor for the course PD305 VA2 – Media, Social Media and Crime for Winter 2027. The course will explore the intersection of social media and public safety, focusing on how these platforms impact law enforcement and communication with the public.
Responsibilities
- This course examines all aspects of the public safety system from an organizational perspective and evaluates public safety organizations in the larger environmental context
- Students will analyse external organizations, public interest, and provincial and national policy and explore the changing and expanding role of the public safety system
- Current issues will be examined through case studies
- This course will examine the impacts of social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube on law enforcement and investigation practices
- Students will learn how to effectively communicate with the general public through social media platforms
- Students will be exposed to the current policies and legislation dealing with delivering sensitive information
- Conversely, students will be exposed to cultural criminal theories, critical Marxist theories and Foucauldian theory
- In addition, students will identify how real-time virtual public platforms allow law enforcement official to discover, conduct and analyze evidence in solving online crimes
- In turn, law enforcement officials will be able to use social platforms as agents of social control to assist in reducing the amount of online/virtual deviance, i.e., cyberbullying

- Master's Degree
- Qualifications – Discipline: Public Administration, Criminology, Media/Communication, Criminal Justice/Policing
- Significant work experience and/or research in a field related to course content, specifically in law enforcement, in particular areas of social media and the impact of technology upon public safety
- Success in teaching online courses
- Receptive to pedagogical approaches that specifically embrace online learners
- Evidence of Good Teaching
- Verification of highest degree
- Doctorate preferred
- Knowledge of learning management systems (particularly Brightspace from Desire2Learn) would be an asset
