Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. Chexology is a global technology company headquartered in New York City, transforming the hospitality industry with innovative software solutions. They are seeking a Senior DevOps Engineer to own infrastructure management, enhance system observability, and improve security posture while supporting a growing team and client base.
Responsibilities
- Own our infrastructure and make it reproducible. Bring infrastructure-as-code discipline to our AWS and Heroku footprint. Reduce the number of things that exist only as tribal knowledge or manual console steps
- Build the observability layer. Finish and mature our observability tools: meaningful dashboards, actionable alerting with low false-positive noise, and tracing that lets us find the root cause of a customer-reported issue in minutes
- Tame background processing. Give us proper visibility and self-service control over our job queues — the ability to see, retry, and clear stuck jobs from a UI instead of a console, plus the queue architecture changes that stop one slow integration from starving everything else
- Harden our security posture. Lead concrete infrastructure security improvements: secrets management, access controls, audit logging, dependency and vulnerability management. Partner with our engineers to turn enterprise security questionnaires from a multi-day slog into a routine task, and lay the groundwork for SOC 2
- Answer security and infrastructure questions from clients and prospective clients as needed
- Own database operations. Manage our Aurora MySQL fleet — upgrades, performance, backups, read replicas, and the read-only/PII-free schemas we use to safely expose data to internal tooling and AI workflows
- Make CI/CD boring and fast. Improve build times and reliability, strengthen our review-app and staging environments so QA can test against realistic data, and keep deploys safe and reversible
- Improve reliability and incident response. Work with our team to establish lightweight runbooks, on-call practices, and post-incident reviews appropriate to our size. Help us measure and improve uptime for venues that run live every night
- Keep an eye on cost. Right-size our infrastructure spend as we scale, without compromising reliability
- Pitch in. We're small. You'll occasionally touch application code (Ruby on Rails), help debug a gnarly customer issue, and share in the support rotation and occasional off-hours maintenance & issue resolution. We want a builder who's hands-on, not a purely strategic architect
Skills
- 5+ years in DevOps / SRE / platform / infrastructure roles, with ownership of production systems serving live customers
- Deep, hands-on experience with AWS (we use Aurora MySQL, S3, and more) and with a PaaS deployment model (we use Heroku today)
- Strong with CI/CD pipelines (we use CircleCI)
- Solid observability chops. You've built monitoring/alerting/tracing that people trust
- Database operations experience: upgrades, performance tuning, backups, replication. MySQL/Aurora experience preferred
- Refined security instincts: secrets management, access control, vulnerability management, and the practical judgment to know which battles matter at a startup our size. Experience with SOC 2 is a strong plus
- Comfortable in and around an application and its background-job system, or a willingness to learn. You don't need to be a Rails expert, but you can't be allergic to reading and writing application code
- Excellent written communication and the temperament to work autonomously on a small team with very little hand-holding. You take a vague problem and turn it into a plan
- A bias toward eliminating toil. When you do something manually twice, you want to automate it the third time
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform or similar)
- Experience migrating workloads (e.g., off a PaaS to containerized/managed infrastructure) without downtime
- Background supporting B2B SaaS with lots of third-party integrations (hospitality property management systems, messaging/Twilio, payments)
- Hospitality, point-of-sale, or device-fleet (mobile/kiosk) experience
- Experience standing up SOC 2 Type II at a small company
Benefits
- Medical, dental, and vision insurance with a $400 monthly employer contribution.
- 401(k) plan to support your long-term financial goals.
- Flexible PTO policy, plus holiday office closures, to recharge.
- Company-provided laptop and tools to help you do your best work.
- Enjoy virtual game days, seasonal get-togethers, and company gatherings that bring the team together to connect, unwind, and celebrate wins.
