Job description: Job Description:SummaryThe full-time position of Student Mental Health Counselor will work under the Director of Counseling & Well-Being Services as part of the Office of Educational Excellence in the Wake Forest School of Medicine in Charlotte. The position is primarily focused on providing confidential counseling and well-being programming to medical, physician assistant, nurse anesthetist, and graduate student learners in biomedical sciences. In addition to individual and couples counseling, the counselor will lead groups and provide mental health outreach programming to learners, faculty, and staff. The counselor will also serve as a consultant to staff and faculty regarding general mental health and well-being issues facing student learners. Services will be provided as a hybrid of in-person for learners in Charlotte and virtual for learners at other locations.Counseling & Well-Being Services offers services within a context that respects the unique dignity and strength of each person and honors cultural and individual differences. CAWS works in collaboration with the Office of Educational Excellence to help create an environment that supports learning and develops the whole person. Our mission is to help students in the School of Medicine find their compass and cultivate resources so that they can successfully navigate the demands of higher education to become flourishing citizen-professionals in healthcare.Essential Functions

• Mental Health Counseling - Triage, assess, and provide ongoing psychotherapy to learners in all medical education programs of Wake Forest School of Medicine (i.e., MD, PA, DNP, biomedical science graduate, and possibly allied health professional schools) using both in-person and teletherapy models. Therapy services may be individual, group, or couples. Serve in rotation with other staff counselors for business-hour triage. Maintain licensure and knowledge base of therapeutic approaches to mental health treatment. Maintain an attitude of continual learning and professional growth.
• Outreach - Work with team and independently to develop and implement programming that supports the well-being needs of learners (e.g., mindfulness training, grief, depression screening events, peer-support training).
• Case Management & Continuum of Care - Complete all record-keeping in a timely and ethical manner. Be responsive and timely in communication to learners, CAWS team, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders. Accessible during regular business hours for consultation or triage. Coordinate with other WFUSOM providers (e.g., LiveWell Health Services) and entities as well as community providers to ensure continuity of care.
• Service to Others/Relationship Building: Develop and maintain relationships with other key stakeholders within the WFUSOM system. Work as part of a flexible and adaptable team that is responsive to evolving student needs. Assist team in planning regarding procedures and processes to best meet student needs and align with standards of care. Contribute to building an office that is seen as a valued and trusted, confidential mental health resource for all learners.

Specific Job Duties

• Provide individual, couples, and group counseling to students at the School of Medicine.
• Conduct triage assessment and intervention for urgent/walk-in appointments.
• Work collaboratively with other School of Medicine departments to ensure effective and timely delivery of services that meet student mental health needs.
• Provide mental health consultation to members of the School of Medicine community to support their work with student learners.
• Provide outreach, workshops, and training on various mental health and well-being topics to learners, faculty, and staff.
• Provide after-hours crisis intervention on an as needed basis. (Note: After-hours calls are initially triaged by our after-hours contracted agency.)
• Collaborate with CAWS team as well as students and other School of Medicine entities in the development and coordination of mental health and well-being programming.
• Conduct assessment of student progress in counseling using CCAPS and other assessment tools.
• Maintain a knowledge of federal, state, and local mental health system and well-being resources.
• Coordinate with Student/Teammate Health and community psychiatrists/physicians who are providing medical care to student clients to provide ethical continuum of care.
• Work collaboratively with the CAWS Nurse Navigator to provide referrals for mental health services when student needs are outside scope of practice of CAWS.
• Keep timely, accurate, and ethical records consistent with CAWS policy.
• Maintain continuing education to ensure provision of services that meet standard of care.
• Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
• Will serve students in the MD, PA, DNP, and biomedical sciences graduate programs in the Wake Forest School of Medicine with the possibility of additional allied health students in the broader Atrium Health network.

SupervisionCounselor will receive at least 1 hour of supervision bi-weekly from the CAWS Director. The team also meets weekly for group supervision. Additional supervision/consultation will be provided as needed.Minimum Requirements

• Master's degree in Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy, Clinical Social Work, or Clinical/Counseling Psychology.
• Experience with crisis intervention and management.
• Experience working with learners from diverse backgrounds.
• NC clinical license. (Associate-level is acceptable.)
• Experience with, and sensitivity to, diverse populations and the ability to build inclusive and equitable communities where differences are appreciated and engaged.
• Excellent oral, written, listening, and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred Requirements

• Experience with eating disorders, substance misuse and/or behavioral addictions.
• Training in trauma-informed care and psychotherapy approaches to trauma.
• Openness to feedback and a commitment to personal and professional growth.
