Job description: The Trauma Acute Care Surgery Advanced Practice Professional (APP) is a mid-level provider responsible for the medical management and coordination of care for patients under the Trauma Acute Care Surgery Service at Munson Medical Center. - Responsible for the medical management and coordination of care for Trauma Acute Care Surgery patients under the supervision of the attending general surgeon.
- Assists in trauma resuscitations and performs advanced diagnostic and therapeutic tasks throughout the patient's hospital stay.
- Available in the ER resuscitation area within 15 minutes for Level 1 Trauma and 30 minutes for Level 2 Trauma Team activations.
- Conducts history and physical exams, admission notes, and daily progress notes.
- Attends at least 50% of Trauma Performance Improvement Committee meetings.
- Provides night call coverage and participates in trauma and critical care patient management.
- Assists with the Surgical Critical Care service under intensivist supervision for critically ill patients, including neurocritical and stroke patients.
- Works collaboratively with the attending Emergency Physician during trauma resuscitations until the attending General Surgeon takes lead.
- Provide 24-hour/seven-day coverage for Trauma Acute Care Surgery and Critical Care patient response.
- Respond to Level I trauma activations within 15 minutes and Level II trauma activations within 30 minutes of patient arrival.
- Respond to trauma/acute care surgery and Critical Care consultations within 30 minutes of notification.
- Manage trauma/acute care surgery and Critical Care patient care in the emergency department, including history and physical exams, initial resuscitation, lab and radiographic studies, consultation, and admission/discharge orders.
- Perform procedures such as suturing, skin stapling, chest tube placement, central and arterial line placements, percutaneous tracheostomy, and wound care as directed by the supervising surgeon.
- Dictate history & physicals, consultations, and procedure notes.
- Address clinical documentation inquiries (CDI) in a timely and professional manner.
- Coordinate with the OR Scheduler, Radiology, and the OR regarding trauma patient status.
- First assist in surgery as needed or requested.
- Participate in daily rounding, managing inpatients, ordering and interpreting labs and diagnostic studies, coordinating care with multidisciplinary teams, and ensuring discharge planning.
- Apply judgment to address the unique needs of trauma and surgical patients across all age groups.
- Attend at least 50% of Trauma Performance Improvement Committee meetings.
- Assist with ICU patient management, including daily progress notes, hemodynamic status monitoring, ventilator management, and ordering necessary studies and medications.
- Collaborate with family members, consultants, and ancillary services (PT/OT, Speech, RT, pharmacy) to coordinate care.
- Participate in self-education and monthly Critical Care Grand Rounds.
- Assist with bedside procedures like CVC and A-line placements, chest tubes, percutaneous tracheostomy, PEG tubes, and wound care.
- Support the transfer of ICU patients out of the unit.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Medical Director of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery or Clinical Leads.

- Work Experience:
- General Surgery experience is preferred but not required
- Previous experience in primary care, ICU or emergency setting is desirable.
- Certification, Licensure, Registration:
- State of Michigan Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant license required
- Current ACLS, PALS, ENPC, or APLS, BLS and ATLS. In addition to the current certifications to be maintained the Fundamentals of Critical Care Support (FCCS), Virtual Critical Care Rounds II (VCCR): Adult by the Society of Critical Care Medicine, Advanced Practice Provider Orientation Course, and Emergency Neurological Life Support Certification by Neuro Critical Care Society will also be required.
