It is important to note that our Alternative Education Schools/ Programs are designed to respond to those students who have not experienced success in the traditional school environment, who are at-risk of dropping out or who may have already dropped out of the traditional high school. The Alternative Education landscape in BPS consists of 12 schools and programs located throughout the city including Adult Education.Position Overview:The Road to Success (RTS) at Charlestown High School (formerly Diploma Plus) is an alternative education program within Charlestown High School (CHS). It exists to support students with earning a high school diploma, developing a positive self identity and creating plans for after graduation. The program is structured for students to complete in two years. Students have the opportunity to work at their own pace. We are a competency and project based learning community with a Restorative Practice Lens. We focus on three core values: Ubuntu, self awareness, and critical consciousness.The RTS Director will report to the CHS Head of School and serves on the CHS Leadership Team. The Director will execute the vision and manage the daily operations of the Road To Success Program. The Director is responsible for the management and development of teachers and support staff within RTS, as well as overseeing the daily instruction and operations of the program. The RTS Director plans professional development aligned with the CHS school goals, leads the RTS team’s efforts to create a positive, structured, consistent, focused and restorative school culture, and takes responsibility for the operations, teaching and learning within RTS. Responsibilities of the role include:Responsibilities

• Teaching and Learning

• Leads school improvement within RTS, including planning and facilitating CPT and ILT meetings

• Provides instructional coaching and feedback to RTS teachers and ensures instructional quality aligned with the CHS Transformation Plan__in the classroom via curriculum review, classroom observations, and providing feedback to teachers

• Provide training to teachers to expand their practice using project based learning and competency based grading

• Develops systems for monitoring students’ academic progress in RTS, including working with the RTS guidance counselor and registrar to assist with data tracking

• Leads initiatives to improve student attendance and academic performance

• Communicates with parents and community members both proactively and responsively to respond to student needs

• Implement and coach teachers in implementing practices and policies supporting Multilingual Learners; ensure compliance as well as positive school experiences for students with varying ELD levels

• Operations

• Maintains communication within RTS team via daily and/or weekly announcements and other methods

• Coordinates staff coverage of RTS with CHS Assistant Principal and CHS main office staff

• Monitors and secures RTS for student safety

• Approves schedule and grade changes and ensures that student information is updated

• Supports student scheduling process during the school year, including new student intake and orientation

• Maintains student files and records, including electronic and paper records as appropriate

• Collaborates with Testing Coordinator on MCAS and other testing schedules, including district exams, ACCESS, district final exams, etc.

• Collaborates with the Special Education Director to monitor special education students’ progress and with ESL Coach and LAT-F to monitor ML programming including maintaining copies of IEPs and other learning plans and ensuring that teachers are familiar with them.

• Attends 2 student extracurricular activities per quarter

• Maintains control of student permission slips and media release forms

III. Climate and Culture

• Ensures opportunities for student voice in RTS culture and operations

• Develops systems for monitoring student support, including counseling, mediation, and communicating with outside agencies/resources

• Collaborates with school-wide student support team, partners and RTS staff to identify and support at-risk students and to provide a supportive environment for all students

• Works with school wide safety team to develop consistent discipline policies and consequences, and ensure implementation in RTS; develops systems to prevent disciplinary/ safety problems; and makes decisions and implements solutions regarding serious or ongoing disciplinary infractions

• Coordinates and supervises RTS community-building activities such as field trips, celebrations, assemblies, open houses, etc.

• Annually review and revise RTS student handbook and monitor compliance

• Lead Restorative Practices within RTS, mediation and conflict resolution as needed, and oversee community circles

• Along with RTS support staff, create and manage students schedules and road maps to ensure all students are on track to graduate

• Explores and promotes partnerships with community organizations, such as university partnerships for early college and career awareness and for curriculum development

• Serves as the liaison for RTS with community and business partners (PIC, Peer Health Exchange, BUILD, Pathways partners, etc.)

• Plan bi-weekly all-program gatherings to build and promote RTS community

• Design and oversee regular ceremonies and activities to recognize success and attendance

• In collaboration with Program Manager, produce monthly newsletter for program to be shared with students, families, and community partners

• Communicates with parents and community members both proactively and responsively to respond to student needs

• School Leadership

• Work with CHS Head of School and CHS Leadership Team to identify student profiles and design program adjustments to reach RTS mission

• Collaborate with other alternative programs to apply best practices

• Network with local business leaders to identify funding and partnership opportunities

• Create a 3 year plan that lays out the mission and vision of the program and the benefits to the district’s off track alternative population

• Develop RTS budget on an annual basis in coordination with CHS Head of School

• Develop RTS spending plan on an annual basis and oversee purchasing, stipends and contracted services for RTS in coordination with CHS Head of School and CHS secretaries

• Maintains RTS supplies and facilities needs

• Design and conduct annual review of RTS staffing needs in response to student, school, and district needs

• Oversee screening, interviewing, and hiring processes for all RTS staff positions

• Participates in weekly after school meetings on school-wide operations and school improvement, and communicates and implements decisions within RTS

• Additional duties as assigned by the Head of School

Job Requirements

• Master’s Degree in related field

• A minimum of 5 years of experience in urban public school setting, with preference given to candidates who have both classroom teaching background in related discipline and leadership experience.

• Demonstrated leadership qualities, interpersonal skills and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, administrators and parents.

• Ability to establish a multi-cultural atmosphere that enhances individual growth and promotes a positive self-image.

• Proficient in technology necessary to retrieve, analyze and report data; Google Suite

• Experience in managing successful teams

• Experience with budget preparation and implementation.

Preferred

• Massachusetts Educators license HS Assistant Principal/Principal

• Teaching experience in a 7-12 educational setting in a core content area.

• Experience as a school administrator.

• Experience designing and implementing professional development around race and equity and serving as a resource for students and staff around these issues

• Prior work with progressive discipline, restorative practices, and implementation of the BPS Code of Conduct

• Experience in large, fast-paced school environments with significant extracurricular commitments, high levels of communication, and parent engagement with a diverse, multilingual population

Terms: BASAS, Group 10B, 211 daysThe BASAS contract year runs from September 1 through August 31. All BASAS members are must work 183 school days with teachers. The additional days beyond the 183 school days shall be agreed upon with your supervisor. These days shall be considered ‘non-scheduled work’ days and should be coded by your supervisor or secretary as ‘S6500’ in the timesheet.
