Machinist Trainees work in the Maintenance Department of the Lake Charles Refinery. The positions are straight day jobs, subject to occasional shift work, turnarounds, call outs and mandatory overtime. Machinist Trainees are responsible for the repair and troubleshooting of rotating equipment within the facility. This work takes place in all areas of the refinery, outside exposed to the weather elements and to blowing air, heat, noise and vibration. The refinery processes involve hazardous and volatile materials under high temperatures and pressures. The work may take place at heights on vessels and towers and/or in confined spaces.
Responsibilities May Include:
- Performing any and all work for which they are qualified, related to repairing, altering, fabricating, removing, installing, assembling, troubleshooting and servicing a wide variety of rotating process equipment, such as pumps, compressors, motors, etc.
- Performing close tolerance work on metal machining equipment such as lathes.
- Maintaining and operating all equipment and tools to support and maintain required skills.
- Sustaining a well-kept and orderly site in the performance of all work duties.
- Working in a team environment and assisting other personnel in accomplishing tasks and major projects.
- Climbing of equipment and the ability to work in confined spaces and at elevated heights is occasionally required as is the ability to work outside in all weather conditions.
- Taking ownership for safe work practices.
- Being able to read and interpret vendor equipment information.
Required Qualifications:
- Legally authorized to work in the United States without restrictions
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- High school degree or GED equivalent
- Willing and able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC). Information can be found at https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic
- Maintain a valid driver's license
- 1 or more years of experience with rotating equipment including pumps, seals, fans, reciprocating compressors, centrifugal compressors, steam turbines and gearboxes in an oil refinery, petrochemical plant, or similar facility
- Must be willing and able to perform/comply, with or without reasonable accommodation, with the following:
- Climb ladders and stairs (up to 50 feet) to perform equipment maintenance
- Raise and transport articles weighing up to 50 punds
- Walk, stand, stoop, climb, sit, and carry material on a daily basis on even and uneven terrain
- Work outside in harsh weather conditions
- Travel as needed up to 15% of the time
- Regularly wear personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Maintain face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly
- Work unscheduled overtime including days, nights, weekends, holidays, etc
- Must be willing/able to respond to callout during off-hours
- Work around chemicals, including acids and bases that may be under high pressure and heat
- Work around high and continuous levels of noise, vibration, extreme temperatures and hot equipment, hydrocarbon vapors, fumes and the potential exposure to refinery chemicals, including but not limited to, hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide, benzene, etc
- Read and understand written safety procedures, work procedures, work permits and instruction manuals in English
- Completion of a relevant apprenticeship or Associate's degree
- 1+ years of experience with mechanical equipment with emphasis in troubleshooting, diagnosing, disassembly, inspection, repair, re-assembly and adjustment of pumps, compressors, motors, and other industrial equipment
- Proficiency in computer usage basics including Microsoft Office and SAP
- Strong oral and written communication skills pertaining to documenting inspection and repair information
